JMT – OpenRoads \ OpenBridge Scholar Program

Overview

In 2020, I identified a critical gap in JMT’s digital delivery strategy: we had advanced software tools, but we lacked recognized subject matter experts (SMEs) who could lead innovation internally and externally. To address this, I championed participation in Bentley’s Premier Scholar Program—an elite accreditation for superusers of OpenRoads Designer and OpenBridge Designer.

This program is not just training—it’s a prestigious credential that validates deep technical mastery and positions participants as thought leaders in the industry. Scholars undergo immersive workshops, case studies, and real-world problem-solving, earning recognition that sets them apart from standard users.

Why This Was Important

  • Industry Shift to Digital Delivery: DOTs and major clients were moving toward model-based design and IFC deliverables. To compete, JMT needed recognized experts who could lead these workflows.
  • Talent Development & Retention: The program gave designers a career path beyond production work—creating leaders, trainers, and innovators within the firm.
  • Competitive Advantage: Having accredited Scholars became a differentiator in proposals and helped us win PennDOT Digital Delivery Pilots and other innovation-driven projects.
  • Strategic Partnership with Bentley: Participation required an E365 enterprise relationship, giving us access to exclusive training, success planning, and direct collaboration with Bentley leadership.

My Role

  • Vision & Advocacy: Pushed for a structured SME development program as part of JMT’s digital transformation strategy.
  • Strategic Networking: Connected with Bentley’s Success Manager and Volaree Rendon, who was creating the inaugural Scholar program.
  • Ground-Floor Participation: Secured JMT’s inclusion in the first-ever pilot alongside WSP and AECOM—making us one of three firms shaping the program.
  • Program Expansion: Extended the initiative to OpenBridge Designer, creating dual expertise tracks for roadway and bridge design.
  • Scaling & Support: Built internal processes for candidate selection, training, and leveraging Scholars as trainers and proposal differentiators.

Impact

  • Second Most Scholars in the U.S.: Nearly 30 accredited experts in OpenRoads and OpenBridge.
  • Enhanced Reputation: Positioned JMT as a leader in digital delivery and innovation.
  • Business Wins: Directly contributed to securing PennDOT Digital Delivery Pilots and other high-profile projects.
  • Cultural Shift: Created a network of internal champions who mentor peers and drive best practices.

What This Demonstrates

I didn’t just join a program—I built a strategic capability that transformed JMT’s digital delivery approach, elevated our talent, and gave us a competitive edge in an evolving industry.
