Virginia Department of Transportation – Odd Fellows Road Interchange – Lynchburg, VA
Role: Senior Highway Engineer & Modeling Lead
Technology: Bentley OpenRoads Technology
Delivery Method: Design-Build
Summary
The Odd Fellows Road project involved upgrading and extending the corridor to connect with US 460/29, including a new tight diamond interchange, three roundabouts, bridge reconstruction over Norfolk Southern Railroad, and multimodal improvements. This Design-Build project required advanced modeling to ensure constructability, minimize property impacts, and meet VDOT standards.
I was brought in for my expertise in 3D modeling and digital workflows, which were essential to manage complex geometry and optimize grading under tight schedule constraints.
My Contributions
- Modeling Leadership: Directed the development of a full 3D corridor model, including:
- Horizontal & vertical geometry
- Superelevation
- Driveway and entrance profiles
- ADA facilities and drainage features
- Advanced Design Techniques: Applied civil cells and dynamic sight-distance checks for multiple driveways and roundabouts, enabling real-time grading optimization.
- Constructability & Risk Reduction: Used modeling to minimize property and utility impacts and verify railroad clearance for the bridge crossing.
- Training & Oversight: Trained staff in modeling best practices and implemented QC measures with independent model reviews for accuracy and constructability.
- Multidisciplinary Coordination: Managed roadway design team and integrated efforts across structural, drainage, and traffic disciplines.
Impact
- Delivered a complex Design-Build project on time and within budget.
- Reduced property impacts and improved constructability through advanced modeling.
- Strengthened JMT’s reputation for digital innovation and design excellence.
