City of Hampton – Civil On-Call – Commerce Drive Extension and Buckroe Streetscape Design – Hampton, VA
Role: Project Manager
Delivery Method: Traditional Design Bid Build
Summary
These two municipal projects demonstrate my ability to manage complex coordination efforts and deliver successful outcomes under tight schedules and challenging conditions.
- Buckroe Streetscape Design:
A fast-tracked streetscape enhancement project from the Boardwalk to N. Mallory Street, completed from concept to construction documents in under 12 months. The design included:- 8′ sidewalks on both sides
- On-road bicycle facilities
- Pedestrian lighting
- Bus stops and bicycle parking
- Maximized on-street parking
Despite construction complications and a low-bid contractor, I navigated out-of-scope issues and maintained stakeholder confidence through proactive communication and problem-solving.
- Commerce Drive Extension:
Involved extending Commerce Drive and enhancing streetscape for adjacent roadways near the I-64 interchange. This project required:- Intensive right-of-way coordination
- Collaboration with VDOT and adjacent redevelopment projects
- Accelerated schedule management to align with stakeholder priorities
My Contributions
- Stakeholder Coordination: Managed city officials, utility providers, and multiple disciplines to align design and construction objectives.
- Schedule & Budget Control: Delivered both projects under tight timelines while addressing unexpected challenges.
- Technology Integration: Leveraged GEOPAK/OpenRoads for rapid design iterations and 3D laser scanning for accurate topography in Buckroe.
- Risk Management: Implemented innovative techniques to minimize property impacts and resolve unforeseen construction issues.
Impact
- Demonstrated leadership in problem-solving and stakeholder engagement under challenging conditions.
- Delivered community-focused enhancements that improved mobility, aesthetics, and safety.
- Strengthened JMT’s reputation for responsiveness and adaptability in municipal projects.
