Delaware Department of Transportation – SR 1 / SR 72 Diverging Diamond Interchange Design Build. Newcastle County, DE
Role: Roadway Design Manager & Modeling Lead
Technology: Bentley InRoads with OpenRoads Technology
Delivery Method: Design-Build
Summary
This project was a showcase of advanced modeling and multidisciplinary coordination under a fast-paced Design-Build schedule. The Delaware SR 1 / SR 72 interchange was reconfigured from a traditional diamond to a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI)—a complex design requiring precise geometry, superelevation, and ADA compliance.
I was brought in by the Project Manager specifically for my expertise in 3D modeling and digital workflows, which were essential to ensure accuracy, constructability, and efficiency under tight schedule constraints.
My Contributions
- Modeling Leadership: Directed an advanced modeling team using OpenRoads technology to create:
- Horizontal & vertical geometry
- Superelevations
- Terrain models
- Linear and surface templates
- ADA facilities and drainage features
- Data Integration: Generated grades, geometrics, and cross-sections for mainline and ramps to support design and construction.
- Strategic Problem-Solving: Applied modeling to resolve complex grading challenges and improve constructability.
- Multidisciplinary Coordination: Ensured seamless integration across roadway, structural, drainage, and traffic design teams.
- Efficiency & Accuracy: My innovative approach reduced design conflicts, minimized construction changes, and supported a cost-efficient solution.
Impact
- Delivered a high-profile DDI project that improved safety and mobility for motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians.
- Demonstrated how digital modeling and leadership can accelerate delivery and reduce risk in Design-Build projects.
- Strengthened JMT’s reputation for innovation and technical excellence in alternative intersection design.
